I grew up in a very creative family- Dad is a retired artisan welder, an engineer and a crafts man. Mam has a very successful bespoke soft furnishings business based in Redcross, Co. Wicklow and can put her hand to anything. She put a sewing needle in my hand when I was very young and I haven’t let go since. My mam is my business adviser and my rock. My eldest brother, John, is a cabinet maker and horticulturalist; my younger brother, Michael, is an electrician and welder by trade but has Traditional Irish music in his soul.
My nanny Jordan (Anne) always made me feel that there wasn’t anything that I couldn’t do. It was her initial encouragement that set me on a path to becoming an aeronautical engineer. After graduating from QUB with a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering I progressed in the engineering industry to finally achieving Chartered status in 2007-all the while, I was continuously sewing and making special pieces of soft furnishings for the interior designers my mam did work for. 2007 was a turning point in my career and it made me realise that I needed to work for myself doing something that allowed me to nurture my love for mathematical design and my ever developing sewing skills.
SÍODA LINGERIE has been in the pipeline for 4 and half years now. I began filtering through my engineering skills and craft skills and decided that I could merge the two disciplines somewhere in the world of fashion so in September 2008 I enrolled for the City & Guilds Creative Techniques (Fashion) course at BMC.
After the birth of my son in October 2009, I had time to think further about where I wanted to be and how I was going to get there. In September 2010 I enrolled onto the Progress Program in BMC along with my C&G course. This program enabled me to investigate different options in the fashion industry. In December 2010, Síoda Lingerie was conceived by combining my many years of sewing experience and skills with sewing difficult fabrics with my design and engineering knowledge…
Síoda has been growing and emerging ever since.
